<p class="MsoNormal">We will be co-hosting an in-person Matter of Balance class at Family Service with the Illinois Extension. Chelsey Byers of our Board of Directors and the Illinois Extension will be co-facilitating with me. The class is on Wednesdays from
9 am-11am on August 11-September 29. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I’m sharing this flyer with you in the hopes that you may know someone who would benefit from this free award-winning course. It is designed primarily for seniors, but would be of benefit to anyone who is balance-challenged or feels vulnerable
to falling. We’ve found that very active seniors who exercise regularly, as well as work, volunteer and/or socialize outside their home are less likely to find the class relevant. Chronically ill, recently injured, and/or more isolated seniors really enjoy
the class and feel that it helps them a lot. I offer that as a guideline as you consider who might benefit most from the course.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For your information, this is a very interactive class that does include 30 minutes of exercise for 6 of the 8 sessions. Many of those exercises are done from a chair or can be adapted to a chair, so people in a wheelchair or people prone
to falling who prefer to do the exercises from a chair (at least initially) would definitely benefit from the class. We also have a physical therapist who presents for an hour one session and takes anyone’s questions. She also welcomes people to visit her
afterwards for a free assessment (actually, in most cases Medicare or insurance covers this assessment 100%) and recommendation of exercises tailored to that person’s individual needs. She just really needs to do that in their PT department at Christie where
she has the proper evaluation equipment. There are videos, role-plays, group and small group discussions, homework (on paper—no PC or tech skills needed), group presentations and even games and celebration. There are healthy snacks and a 10-minute break
in the middle of the 2-hour block. So it’s a very comfortable pace and lots of socialization for mature adult learners.

<p class="MsoNormal">Please feel free to share this information with any clients, friends, or family members that you feel would benefit from the course. If we have staff who are interested in taking the class, our previous policy has been that you can count
one hour as your lunch break and one hour as paid work time with the permission of your supervisor. So check with your supervisor to make sure that she is comfortable with your participation and there is coverage for your position and regular responsibilities.
