[SeniorTaskForce-News] Senior Task Force: Upcoming Training

We have a very small group signed up for the Diabetes Self Management leaders training scheduled for July 23, 24, 30, and 31.

This training prepares people to offer the Stanford course to those in our community who have diabetes or who are caregivers of someone with diabetes.

Leaders need not be professionals.  In fact, the best leaders are usually not social workers or teachers or nurses but people who have personal experience with diabetes!  Potential leaders do not have to have taken the course previously.

This is a free training, offered here at Family Service by Cindy Fraser and myself under the egis of the Area Agency on Aging.  Classes are 9:00 - 4:00 each of the four days.  We provide a leaders' manual and a companion book and CD as well as on-going technical assistance and fidelity monitoring for leaders.  We can also help them access books, program charts, flip charts, etc. for their classes, if needed.

With the growth of diabetes in the population, this course becomes more and more valuable as it approaches the disease as something that people can manage while still having a fulfilling social, family, and work life.  It is all about empowering people to control their diabetes instead of letting it control them.
