Subject: FW: Save Illinois Cares Rx----Call Your Representative and
Senator Today
ECIAAA Advocacy ALERT
MEMO TO: Members of the ECIAAA Corporate Board and Advisory Council
Service Providers in Area 05
Advocates for Older Americans in Illinois
FROM: Mike O'Donnell, Executive Director, East Central
Illinois Area Agency on Aging
DATE: May 5, 2011
RE: Save Illinois Cares Rx - Call Your State Senators
and Representatives Today
The East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging in collaboration with I4a
(Illinois Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the Illinois Alliance
for Home and Community Care, and the Make Medicare Works Coalition in
Illinois, is advocating to Save the Illinois Cares Rx Program.
As many of you know, the General Assembly is working on the state budget
now. It is very important that they hear from constituents about the
importance of Illinois Cares Rx.
WE NEED YOU TO CALL YOUR LEGISLATOR THIS WEEK! This is a very
important time!
We are sharing the attached materials from the Make Medicare Works
Coalition to help you tailor your message to the State Representative
and Senator serving your community:
Attached Documents
Zip Code Data: The attached pdf down enrollees by zip code and then
connects it to the legislator who covers some or all of that zip code.
It starts with state representatives and then does senators.
ECIAAA has prepared the attached summary of Illinois Cares Rx Enrollees
by House and Senate District in Area 05.
What we are encouraging people to say about it is this: "Here are the
zip codes that you represent. You may not represent everybody in this
zip code, though, so this is not the actual number of people in your
district on this program. Still, we think this gives you a good idea
of the impact cutting this program will have on the broader community
that play an important part in representing."
One Pager on Illinois Cares Rx: This can help prep you to talk to your
legislator and you can e-mail it or fax it to your legislator as well.
Sample Fax/Letter to Senator: Please feel free to use this as an
example of a fax, e-mail, or letter that you can send.
Senate District 7: This is another way for you to present the
information if you are meeting a rep or senator in person.
What Do I Do?
The easiest and most effective thing for you to do right now is call the
senators and representative in your area. Ask them to protect Illinois
Cares Rx and make sure it is funded in the budget. Give them some
brief information on how will impact the people you serve. Then,
follow up with a fax similar to the Sample Fax/Letter to Senator.
Go to www.ilga.gov <http://www.ilga.gov> to get your Senator and
Representative contact information. Or, if you are not sure who they
are, go to
http://www.elections.il.gov/districtlocator/districtofficialsearchbyaddr
ess.aspx
<http://www.elections.il.gov/districtlocator/districtofficialsearchbyadd
ress.aspx> and type in an address.
Update on Illinois Cares Rx
Governor Quinn has proposed eliminating Illinois Cares Rx. Since that
proposal was released, the Make Medicare Works Coalition has been
working with legislators, HFS staff, and the Governor's Office on
alternatives to total elimination of the program. It is likely that
Illinois Cares Rx will not remain in its current form. But, we are
hoping to keep Illinois Cares Rx as a viable program that still
provides needed assistance.
Why Is It Important to Contact My Legislator Now?
Right now, important decisions are being made about what Programs will
be eliminated and how those Programs that are not eliminated will be
funded. It is imperative that the legislators hear loud and clear
that eliminating Illinois Cares Rx or scaling it back so much that it
does not provide sufficient assistance is unacceptable. In this
environment, nothing is secure. But, if legislators are continually
hearing that a certain Program is important, it is more likely to
remain.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you
