Practices Training

Includes:

*      Mental Health First Aid - Michael Lau, North Central Behavioral
Health Systems:  Introduction to a program designed to increase mental
health literacy and to decrease stigma in the community. 12 hour
certification course that teaches people key skills to provide initial
help to others who may be developing mental health problems or
experiencing a mental health crisis.  Introductory session including
educational goals, target audiences, and program implementation issues.

*      Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment - Tony Zipple, Thresholds:
As many as 50% of people with severe mental illness have co-occurring
substance use disorders.  People with co-occurring disorders have
significantly elevated risk of incarceration, hospitalization, chronic
medical disorders, suicide attempts, and other conditions that are
expensive and reduce quality of life.  Traditional treatment approaches
have not significantly improved outcomes.  This workshop will describe
Integrated Dual Disorders Treatment, an evidence based practice that has
proven successful serving people with co-occurring disorders.
Implementation challenges and lessons from Thresholds' more than ten
years of experience will be discussed.

*      Primary and Mental Health Care Integration - Tony Zipple and Ann
Hruby, Thresholds; Emily Brigell, University of Illinois Chicago:  This
presentation will describe a collaborative approach to integrating
primary and mental health care services involving the University of
Illinois College of Nursing and Thresholds.  Integrated Health Care is
an academic nurse-managed center of the UIC College of Nursing through
which faculty family practitioners provide primary health care services
to individuals with serious mental illness.  The clinics are located at
Thresholds sites.  The presenters will provide a brief history of this
innovative, 10-year partnership, describe the integrated model of care
and highlight new interventions, successes, and challenges.
