Advocate for Long-Term Services and Supports in Health Reform
Please Contact Congress to Include Long-Term Services and Supports in
Health Reform and to Cosponsor the CLASS Act
Health reform legislation is being drafted by Congress and is expected
to move quickly when they return from their Easter recess on April 20.
Your help is needed now to urge Congress to address the greatest unmet
care need and coverage gap for America's seniors - long-term services
and supports, often called long-term care. The cost of this care
impoverishes thousands of seniors and their families every year and too
often home and community services are not available. There is growing
momentum for including these services in the bill and an emerging
consensus on how to do it. If Congress does not address this problem
now, it may be decades before this opportunity arises again.
Please help by urging your members of Congress to include long-term
services and supports in health reform, and to support legislation to
address the issue - the Community Living Assistance Services and
Supports (CLASS) Act, S. 697
<http://capwiz.com/ncoa/utr/1/JSQUKFLOAB/MTMOKFLPEQ/3145023661> and
H.R. 1721
<http://capwiz.com/ncoa/utr/1/JSQUKFLOAB/MNOSKFLPER/3145023661> . The
CLASS Act would create a nationwide voluntary insurance program to help
people get coverage for long-term services and supports. Financed
through voluntary payroll deductions of about $30 per month, with an
option to opt out for those who choose not to participate, this
legislation will help remove barriers to independence by providing a
$50-$100 a day cash benefit to individuals who are unable to perform
activities of daily living. To learn more about the CLASS Act, click
here <http://capwiz.com/ncoa/utr/1/JSQUKFLOAB/JHDCKFLPES/3145023661> .
It is important that members of Congress hear from constituents over the
next two weeks about the importance of long-term services and supports.
Please take a minute to email your Senators and Representative on the
issue by clicking on the "Take Action" link above.
In addition, please contact the local office of your members of Congress
and request a meeting during the upcoming Congressional recess (April
4-19) to discuss the issue of long-term services and supports. You may
look up the contact information here
<http://capwiz.com/ncoa/utr/1/JSQUKFLOAB/OQFOKFLPET/3145023661> .
Consider inviting other advocates in your community to join you at this
meeting. If you know of health reform meetings that are taking place in
your community, please attend and help make the case that long-term
services and supports should be included.
Please pass this information on to others! Encouraging your colleagues,
friends, and seniors to email and call will significantly increase our
reach and ensure that our efforts are successful!
