<p>Dr. Micheal Biehl, DVM, Ph.D., a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and a Clinical Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois will present <u>Tips for Safely Mixing Pets and Plants in Your Garden</u> June 27th at 7 pm at Extension Office Auditorium. <em>His talk will highlight potential dangers our pets face in the home garden from plants and chemicals.</em> Dr. Biehl brings a wealth of experience that includes extensive experience for the safety assessment of veterinary products, including 17 years in with Pfizer’s R&D Global Operations. Dr. Biehl currently teaches and coordinates 8 different professional veterinary and graduate student courses at the University of Illinois, primarily focusing on the toxicology discipline. In addition, he is the College Corporate Relations Liaison and the Faculty Advisor to the student-run Poisonous Plants Garden. </p>

<p>Over the past couple of months, Master Naturalists planned, purchased, pre-cut, and put together homes for our feathered and fuzzy friends. This is the second year of the project with improvements in building proper nest boxes and it gives the opportunity to promote their use by Master Naturalists and the public.</p>
<p>For the bees, we focused on providing nest boxes for native solitary bees, primarily Mason Bees (<em>Osmia</em> species). Mason Bees are efficient pollinators and they lay eggs in tunnels in wood, isolating each egg with mud walls. Due to habitat destruction and our obsession with keeping things neat and tidy by removing old tree stumps, brush, and dead wood, nest boxes can provide valuable nesting space. Each nest box has multiple tunnels of varied diameter to accommodate different species of bees.</p>
<p>For the birds, we built homes for the Eastern Bluebird (<em>Sialia sialis</em>). Because they are cavity nesters, they are very affected by habitat loss due to human development and competition from other more aggressive cavity nesters such as tree swallows, and the non-native European starlings and house sparrows. Bluebirds are happy to use a bluebird box to raise up to two broods a year. In attracting bluebirds to the boxes, location is key. Bluebirds are not likely to inhabit your urban backyard and are happiest in more open, natural landscapes. So, while the bluebirds may not come to your backyard, other birds could still be served by the boxes. </p>
<p>Both bee and bird boxes will be available for sale ($12 each) at the Champaign County Master Gardener Garden Walk on June 17. Our booth will be located at the Idea Garden on Lincoln, just south of Florida in Urbana. These will also be sold at our Farmer's Market booth on July 8th.
