They would love to have a table set up at the event with some educational materials on water conservation and composting. Extension will provide displays and handouts, volunteers will be needed to hand these out.</p>

In honor of the 25<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the Garden Walk, this year’s theme is <strong><em>Mastering the Garden</em> </strong>and features gorgeous gardens of your fellow Master Gardeners as well as the Champaign County Nursing Home and Juvenile Detention Center gardens and, of course, the Idea Garden. We still need site volunteers for the gardens on Garden Walk Day and Garden Angels to help in late May and early June. MGs answer questions on flowers, vegetables, insects, plant disease, turf, trees, landscaping, and more! Interns are required to complete 10 hours of service at the Horticulture Hotline to become certified. <p>Join us for a day of geological discovery in and around Starved Rock State Park in north-central Illinois, Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 8am-6:30pm. We’ll take a fascinating trip through Illinois geologic history to discover how changing environments and catastrophic events have shaped the landscape in this beautiful area. Some highlights of our field trip will include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Exploring the spectacular canyons of Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks and contemplating the role that glacial processes and erosion have played in sculpting these magnificent features.</li>
<li>Enjoying breathtaking views of the Illinois River from atop Starved Rock! While there, we will discuss the history of its formation and the important role it plays in transporting goods from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. (Bring your binoculars to catch a glimpse of water fowl fishing beneath the Lock & Dam or possibly an eagle on Plum Island!)</li>
<li>Visiting Buffalo Rock State Park to discuss the importance of geologic resources mined in the region, the environments that were present during their formation, and the environmental impacts that have occurred from mining.</li>
</ul>
<p>This trip will be led by Julie Angel, Associate Professor of Earth Sciences, and Mindy Tidrick, Geology Instructor, both of Parkland College. They will enlighten us on geological topics (Continuing Education) on the way to Starved Rock, and lead us on hikes in the areas we will visit. Several hikes are planned, which will be easy to moderate difficulty, lengths of one mile round trip maximum, with stairs or slopes to climb to access observation areas. Be prepared with appropriate shoes and clothing, walking stick (if desired), insect and sun protection. Please choose your boxed lunch selection in the form below. We are planning presentations on the bus to orient us and also count some of the travel time as CE hours. The field trip fee (which includes bus, lunch, and any entrance fees) is $25 for Master Naturalists/Gardeners and $30 for guests. Limit one guest per MN/MG. Registration will begin on April 3 for MNs (plus one guest). If spots remain open on April 15th, it will be opened to Master Gardeners + one guest. So you will want to get your registration in early to reserve your space on the bus!</p>
