The 2017 4-Seasons Gardening Webinar series is set to begin January 31! Here are the first three webinars for the year:

How to Have Healthy Houseplants - February 14 at 1:30 pm and February 16 at 6:30 pm

Houseplants add life and beauty to a home. Rhonda Ferree, Extension Horticulture Educator, will provide simple tips to select and care for houseplants. After this program, even those with “brown garden thumbs” will know how to have healthy houseplants throughout their home.

Moth Orchids – Start an Orchid Odyssey- March 7 at 1:30 pm and March 9 at 6:30 pm

As the most highly evolved flowers on earth, orchids are an amazingly diverse plant family growing in deserts, mountains, marshes, northern woods, Illinois forests, and even our homes. If you are looking for an easy-to-grow but elegant houseplant, moth orchids are a great option. In this webinar, state Master Gardener Coordinator, Sandy Mason, will help you learn how to grow, repot and even rebloom moth orchids.

Shiitake Mushrooms in the Garden and the Kitchen with Susan Biggs-Warner

Tuesday, February 21 at 6 p.m.

According to the Vermilion County Conservation District, shiitake mushrooms are naturally grown in Japan and Asia. They have only been available as an imported gourmet mushroom since 1974. That is when the first shiitake mushrooms were grown on logs in the U.S., in North Carolina. The conservation district began research on shiitake mushrooms in 1986 with the inoculation of seven hundred oak logs. The purpose was not to grow "exotic" mushrooms, but rather to offer an alternative woodland cash crop to landowners. Dr. Chris Burnett, formerly of the Illinois Natural History Survey is credited with the initial research of growing shiitake mushrooms on logs at the Vermilion County Conservation District.

Susan Biggs Warner is well-known in the community for her work with the Vermilion County Conservation District. Biggs-Warner will explain how to grow shiitake mushrooms on your own property. She will also have recipes made with shiitake mushrooms for the attendees to taste.

Adding to the program will be Vermilion County Master Gardener Jan Hetherington, who has successfully grown these mushrooms in Danville for the past 3 years. She will be on hand to answer questions after Susan has finished presenting.

There is no cost for this program, but we ask that participants register so we can have enough handouts.

CE: Gardening Insights Day

Saturday, February 25 at 9:00 am - Decatur

Join the Macon County Master Gardeners for a unique and fun-filled day of horticulture programs. With 12 classes to choose from, beginning and expert gardeners will find topics of interest.

This year, we have two outstanding keynote speakers for you to enjoy. The Bread Monk, is a nationally known chef that specializes in herbal breads and enjoys his own herb garden outside of his kitchen at the Abbey. He has written multiple books, hosted a PBS baking show and is an online baking instructor with Craftsy.com. Fr. Dominic Garramone will be demonstrating herbal breads and will have you laughing with his enthusiasm and good humor.

Rita Randolph a life-long horticulturist, photographer and published author, wrote Fine Gardening’s Container Gardening special issue in 2009 and has published her own book, A History of Horticulture. You will be shown how she easily creates eye candy during the program about container and small gardens by using textures and color.
