Tuesday, October 4 at 2 p.m.

If you are interested in learning more about the invasive jumping worms register for the webinar scheduled for Tuesday, October 4 at 2 p.m.

Jumping worms are exotic earthworms that were first found in Illinois in 2015. These invaders have the potential to drastically alter the soil and plant communities, impacting both natural ecosystems and residential landscaping. In 2016, reports of new populations have been coming in from across the state.

Join Extension Forester Chris Evans for an in-depth update on jumping worms in Illinois. This one-hour webinar will provide an update on the distribution of jumping worms in Illinois, discuss new research on their impacts to natural and managed lands, remind everyone how to identify jumping worms, and provide information on reporting new populations.

Have you seen what is going on in the countryside? Have you wondered about those strips of grasses and trees that now fill what once was a farm field? Many farmers are planting pollinator mixes, prairie plants and trees to help save our wonderful resources. The Master Naturalists along with the Champaign County Soil and Water Conservation District have found four wonderful farms that are willing to show what farmers have been doing over the last 20 years. This tour will cover a lot of topics from pruning and thinning of trees to the best way to get a pollinator seeding to grow. It will also show the need for Master Naturalists to help farmers with this both in plant ID and maintenance. We will see how a great habitat can be made for both our furry friends and the pollinators! Please join us for a bus tour of 3 different stops in Champaign County on October 26th.

While it’s hard to believe, the year 2016 is slowly winding down. Have you completed your volunteer and continuing education hours? If not, there’s still plenty of time to do so!

To remain an active Master Gardener volunteer, you are required to earn 30 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education hours annually. Master Gardener Interns are required to complete a 60-hour internship prior to committing to the annual hour requirements. Volunteers must also sign an annual Volunteer Agreement form which is usually distributed in November.

Why you should report all your hours (not just the minimum)?

So you will be eligible for awards

So you can amaze your friends with the number of hours you have logged

So our funders can see just how fantastic MGs are and how much they do in the community

Please record any volunteer hours before the end of the year (December 31, 2016). Visit the Volunteer Hour Reporting webpage to review how to record your hours.

The only way we know that hours have been earned is if you report them. These hours are also submitted to the state to support funding. If you need help with the reporting process, contact Horticulture Program Coordinator, Ava Heap at 333-7672 or carmien2@illinois.edu for assistance.
