<p>As honeybees and other pollinators continue to struggle, more and more people are stepping up to help as hobby beekeepers. Have you considered the veil and hive? Join the Champaign County Master Gardeners as they welcome Dakota Radford, a 4th year hobby beekeepers from Douglas Hart Nature Center in Matoon, IL. Dakota will acquaint you with the basics of getting your new hobby started, while sharing her beginner experiences and advice for keeping bees. Dakota will also address pollination syndromes as well as various ways to promote pollinators in your garden. It will be a great educational and informative evening regardless of whether you'll be starting your own hive or just wanting to help the pollinators!</p>

<p>By the end of summer, the perennials, shrubs and trees in your yard may have produced some Jurassic sized leaves. When you look out the window in January those leaves will be a distant memory. There is a fairly simple and inexpensive way to preserve what nature has created and enjoy it for years to come.</p>
<p> Leaf casts make unique and beautiful garden art. They also provide great conversation pieces for garden visitors. This project can be made with all sorts of leaves: hosta, fig, rhubarb, sycamore etc. Large leaves make great bird baths, stepping stones or even fountains. Medium size leaves can be used as candle holders. The actual cast is made from products you can find at a local hardware store like concrete, sand, outdoor paint and sealer. All you need is for someone to explain the process. </p>
<p>Master Gardener Pat Sollars has been making leaf casts for years. An experienced artisan, she will walk you through the process with samples of each stage. You will learn how a leaf's natural depressions and veins can be captured in the smallest detail. Pat will also explain how to paint a cured cast. There will be detailed instructions for you to take home. </p>
<p>There is a $5 admission fee and due to logistics this is not a ‘Make and Take’.</p>

<p>Jumping worms are exotic earthworms that were first found in Illinois in 2015. These invaders have the potential to drastically alter the soil and plant communities, impacting both natural ecosystems and residential landscaping. In 2016, reports of new populations have been coming in from across the state.</p>
<p>Join Extension Forester Chris Evans for an in-depth update on jumping worms in Illinois. This one-hour webinar will provide an update on the distribution of jumping worms in Illinois, discuss new research on their impacts to natural and managed lands, remind everyone how to identify jumping worms, and provide information on reporting new populations.</p>

<p>Doug is a Local Food Systems and Small Farms Extension educator with University of Illinois Extension. Fermentation gardening is a new trend with homeowners. According to the garden trend report, "People are growing hops for home brewing and grapes for home-made wine". The report says that some people like the creative aspect of home brewing, while others, like the science behind the brew. Doug will explain the basics of making mead, beer and ginger ale at home. There will be handouts and instructions to take home.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><strong><em>November 18-19 - 8:00 am - U of I Japan House</em></strong></span></p>
<p>Jay Skuba, of Zoen Sekkei-Sha+Associates, Lake Forest, Illinois will be leading a hands-on Aesthetic Pruning effort at Japan House (2000 South Lincoln Ave., Urbana). Participants will meet in the parking lot South of the Japan House on November 18 and 19 starting at 8 a.m. and work until days’ end at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.</p>
<p>There will be a short lunch break from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pack a lunch and be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. Dress for weather conditions since all work is outside.</p>
<p>The pruning sessions are open to all Japan House volunteers, Master Gardeners, ISA Certified Arborists, IAA Member Arborists, University of Illinois students of Landscape Architecture and Ornamental Horticulture.</p>
<p>Aesthetic Pruning is out of the scope of most garden pruning. Sessions aim to sharpen the aesthetic eye and guidance which can be universally applied by gardeners and arborists alike.</p>
<p>This 2-day workshop is designed to lift pruning skills of participants to a higher level by working in a Japanese-style (Wafu) Garden. the focus will include bringing out the essential beauty and natural character of trees, drawing attention to their form, and stopping short of tight control or artifice.</p>
<p>This workshop in support of the Japan House is sponsored by Zoen Sekkei-Sha+Associates of Lake Forest, Illinois, which is a design, build and maintain landscape company, specializing in Japanese-style Gardens and Water Features. </p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><strong><em>Don’t Forget to Enter Those Hours!</em></strong></span></p>
<p>While it’s hard to believe, the year 2016 is slowly winding down. Have you completed your volunteer and continuing education hours? If not, there’s still plenty of time to do so!</p>
<p>To remain an active Master Gardener volunteer, you are required to earn 30 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education hours annually. Master Gardener Interns are required to complete a 60-hour internship prior to committing to the annual hour requirements. Volunteers must also sign an annual Volunteer Agreement form which is usually distributed in November.</p>
<p>Why you should report all your hours (not just the minimum)?</p>
<ul>
<li>So you will be eligible for awards</li>
<li>So you can amaze your friends with the number of hours you have logged</li>
<li>So our funders can see just how fantastic MGs are and how much they do in the community</li>
</ul>
<p>Please record any volunteer hours before the end of the year (December 31, 2016). <p>The only way we know that hours have been earned is if you report them. These hours are also submitted to the state to support funding.
