Wednesday, September 14 at 5:30 p.m.

This free event will include a tour of the facility, four speakers involved with the community garden, an update on future projects, and free snacks. Information will also be provided on Prosperity Gardens’ involvement in Postharvest Loss Avoidance through Technology and Education (PLATE).

Here is the lineup of speakers for the event:

Mark Taylor - Professor Taylor has worked in the fields of interior design, construction

management, architecture, and scenic construction for the film industry. He was the architectural faculty lead for the University of Illinois Solar Decathlon projects in 2009 and 2011. He teaches undergraduate design studios and a seminar focused on integrating solar systems in compact living units. Mark has worked with Prosperity Gardens for 2 years. His students designed and built the system for our Mobile Market, two compost bins, and a greenhouse and have spent time weeding, mowing, and landscaping the gardens. His students also designed the plans for the wash-and-pack and Prosperity Gardens headquarters remodel. Mark has a vested interest in the community and works alongside everyone at the gardens.

Latifah Parrish - Tia is currently finishing school in Urbana. Upon graduation she hopes to pursue a career in service through firefighting or serving as an ambulance medic. This summer, Tia worked at Prosperity Gardens growing her knowledge of food and the environment. The hot days were good practice for her! She is excited to share her experiences at Prosperity Gardens.

Prosperity Gardens Board Member - A member of the board will speak on behalf of Prosperity Gardens and the work we do on a daily basis to “cultivate a healthy community.” You will learn more about the programs Prosperity Gardens offers and where the organization is headed.

Nicole Bridges - As Prosperity Gardens’ Program Coordinator, Nicole will share more about the PLATE wash-and-pack project that will support the farm at Beardsley Park. She will talk about the collaborative work with the City of Champaign, University of Illinois Extension, and the ADM Institute. She will also discuss her 2016 trip to Ethiopia in which she spent 21 days working on post-harvest-loss challenges within a local community and how that experience impacted the design and function of the wash-and-pack facility. Nicole is an ACES graduate and a proud University of Illinois Extension employee.

By the end of summer, the perennials, shrubs and trees in your yard may have produced some Jurassic sized leaves. When you look out the window in January those leaves will be a distant memory. There is a fairly simple and inexpensive way to preserve what nature has created and enjoy it for years to come.

Leaf casts make unique and beautiful garden art. They also provide great conversation pieces for garden visitors. This project can be made with all sorts of leaves: hosta, fig, rhubarb, sycamore etc. Large leaves make great bird baths, stepping stones or even fountains. Medium size leaves can be used as candle holders. The actual cast is made from products you can find at a local hardware store like concrete, sand, outdoor paint and sealer. All you need is for someone to explain the process.

Master Gardener Pat Sollars has been making leaf casts for years. An experienced artisan, she will walk you through the process with samples of each stage. You will learn how a leaf's natural depressions and veins can be captured in the smallest detail. Pat will also explain how to paint a cured cast. There will be detailed instructions for you to take home.

There is a $5 admission fee and due to logistics this is not a ‘Make and Take’.

While it’s hard to believe, the year 2016 is slowly winding down. Have you completed your volunteer and continuing education hours? If not, there’s still plenty of time to do so!

To remain an active Master Gardener volunteer, you are required to earn 30 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education hours annually. Master Gardener Interns are required to complete a 60-hour internship prior to committing to the annual hour requirements. Volunteers must also sign an annual Volunteer Agreement form which is usually distributed in November.

Why you should report all your hours (not just the minimum)?

So you will be eligible for awards

So you can amaze your friends with the number of hours you have logged

So our funders can see just how fantastic MGs are and how much they do in the community

Please record any volunteer hours before the end of the year (December 31, 2016). Visit the Volunteer Hour Reporting webpage to review how to record your hours.

The only way we know that hours have been earned is if you report them. These hours are also submitted to the state to support funding. If you need help with the reporting process, contact Horticulture Program Coordinator, Ava Heap at 333-7672 or carmien2@illinois.edu for assistance.

Many volunteer opportunities are available before the end of the year. Please review the listserv for emails including activities, times and places. For contact information for specific gardens or projects, please reference the 2016 Master Gardener Handbook and Membership Directory. Email Ava if you need a copy.
