Each year the Tropical Section of the Idea Garden has to answer this question. We love Zone 7 10 plants but they cannot survive our winter weather. Through the year they multiply and the tropical section becomes a “jungle” of plants by the end of August. Then the threat of frost</p>
<p>begins to loom toward the end of September and around the first week in October the group digs, pots and hauls the plats, some 6-7 truckloads, to the University of Illinois greenhouse. In the spring, hopefully after the last frost, the plants come back to the garden and the season starts all over again.</p>
<p>So you like Colocasias, cannas, bananas, hibiscus and others and what can you do. Would you like to add some to your home garden but don’t have the place to winter them over? We will cover how to maintain these plants during the year, how to prepare them for a move into a warm facility for winter and maintain them until spring. What do they need in the way of fertilizer, water and “tender loving care” both inside and out? Come and visit our Tropical Section in the Idea Garden on Saturday August 20th at 10:00 AM and we will try to answer some of your questions on how to have the “tropics” around your house.</p>
