<p>Postharvest Loss Avoidance through Technology and Education (PLATE) is a two-year research and development project funded by the ADM Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest Loss at the University of Illinois that aims to minimize postharvest loss while revitalizing urban land. Specialists at Chanute Fields in Rantoul and Prosperity Gardens in Champaign are researching, implementing, and teaching best practices for food harvesting. Mobile wash stations and cooling units are being created to extend crop availability through proper washing and packing for long term storage and sale.</p>
<p>Once the stations have been built and tested, we plan to make the research and development available worldwide. It is hoped that poor areas in our community and across the globe will be able to utilize similar structures where they experience their own food deserts, enriching the diets of residents. PLATE will bring safe, fresh, affordable, and nutritious food to families and individuals through our community and worldwide.</p>
<p>Please join us for <strong>Save the Food: A Harvest Loss Avoidance Tour</strong>, where you will be able to see firsthand the cooling unit and wash stations and listen to specialists in the field of postharvest loss avoidance. There will be multiple speakers involved in the project, including growers and producers.</p>
<p><strong>Save the Food</strong> will take place on <strong>Monday, August 8, </strong>from<strong> 5:30-7:30 p.m. </strong>at the<strong> Rantoul FFA garden</strong> at the corner of Doolittle Blvd and Gray Ave. in Rantoul. Come see the change happening within our community as we work to expand the ability for everyone to have safe, fresh, and affordable produce on their plate.</p>

<p>So you want to have tropical plants in the yard but what do you do with them in the winter? Each year the Tropical Section of the Idea Garden has to answer this question. We love Zone 7 10 plants but they cannot survive our winter weather. Through the year they multiply and the tropical section becomes a “jungle” of plants by the end of August. Then the threat of frost</p>
<p>begins to loom toward the end of September and around the first week in October the group digs, pots and hauls the plats, some 6-7 truckloads, to the University of Illinois greenhouse. In the spring, hopefully after the last frost, the plants come back to the garden and the season starts all over again.</p>

<p>Does your garden need a makeover? Juanita Gammon, a talented local artist has taught art classes for decades. Her creative nature combined with her gardening expertise gives her a unique sense of color and flair with plants. Jessica Lopez is a trained Landscape Designer and has been designing local gardens for years. Jessica and Juanita serve as the Border Coordinators at the University of IL Idea Garden creating unique and special garden designs year after year. Learn how to design your own garden and create a special area you will enjoy.</p>

East Central Illinois Master Naturalists (ECIMN) are making available for purchase a selection of trees and shrubs indigenous to Illinois. Our soil and climate have tested these plants for 8,000 years, it's a good bet they will work for you!
