<p><span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>5 Master Gardeners</strong></span> are needed to help plant annuals at the Research Park Monarch Festival scheduled for this Friday, July 8 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Master Gardeners will be assisting with the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts staff to help children plant pots for pollinators. They have received over 200 donated plants from Country Arbors. A great night of fun flower planting for the whole family!</p>

<p>Take a break from the hot summer heat and volunteer in the air-conditioned Horticulture Hotline!</p>
<p><strong>Volunteers are needed for the Horticulture Hotline!</strong> <strong><em>As a reminder, you are not required to answer homeowner’s questions immediately.</em></strong> We encourage you to kindly tell the homeowner that we will respond to questions within 48 hours with the best researched answer we can come up with.</p>
<p>If the Horticulture Hotline is having a slow day, you are welcome to bring personal material to work on (books, laptop, etc.) while waiting for a homeowner.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><strong><em>Pollinator Pocket People Training</em></strong></span></p>
<p>Are a Master Gardener or Master Naturalist who is interested in promoting pollinator conservation efforts across the state? BEE a positive influence on pollinator populations and become a Pollinator Pocket Person! </p>
<p>A Pollinator Pocket Person will serve as a liaison between the University of Illinois Extension Office and home gardeners, civic groups, and organizations interested in learning about Pollinator Pockets. This training will equip volunteers to be able to give talks and presentations to groups wanting to learn more about Pollinator Pockets, and serve as a source of science-based information for groups interested in installing pollinator-friendly gardens.</p>
<p>Pollinator Pocket People agree to log 10 volunteer hours and 1 continuing education hour per year to remain active. This time counts towards the required 30 volunteer hours and 10 continuing education hours for the MG/MN programs. Click the links below to view details for each training session:</p>

<p>Walter has done extensive research and attended national training sessions for bee keepers. As a local expert he will discuss how to make your bee hive thrive. Honey bee decline is often in the news. Even if you are not a bee keeper it is important that gardeners are educated on making their gardens friendly habitats for bees and other pollinators. Researchers have found that backyard bee-friendly gardens can make a difference in the diversity of bees in a community. Walter is known for his interesting and lively presentations. Walter has a new Greenhouse and will be selling plants for pollinators along with his own unique design of Hive Boxes. There will be honey tasting from Walter's own hives along with plants and other products for sale from Walt's acres after the class.</p>

<p>Interested in expanding the use of native flora in your yard or garden? East Central Illinois Master Naturalists (ECIMN) are making available for purchase a selection of trees and shrubs indigenous to Illinois. Our soil and climate have tested these plants for 8,000 years, it's a good bet they will work for you! Click here to see a <a style="color: #4276aa;" href="http://web.extension.illinois.edu/cfiv/downloads/54233.pdf"><span style="color: #4276aa;">detailed description</span></a> of each tree and shrub offered below. </p>
<p>Enjoy the benefits of using native plants:</p>
<ul>
<li>Increases/restores the native range of species that are important to local ecology and wildlife habitat (like butterflies!)</li>
<li>Decreases the risks found with monoculture plantings, i.e. pests, diseases, invasive, etc.</li>
<li>Using natives is ecologically responsible</li>
<li>Native species are adapted to local weather patterns and are more tolerant of changes in weather, when they are sited correctly</li>
<li>Can reduce overall costs on an acre of property by as much as 75%</li>
</ul>
<p>All plants come in special 5 gallon containers which are designed to encourage numerous roots but inhibit circling roots. No chemicals (such as copper) are used to enhance a fibrous root system.</p>
<p>Plants cost $25 each (including shipping and handling). <strong>Orders will be accepted until 8/31/2016.</strong> </p>
<p>Your order will be <strong>delivered locally for pickup on Friday, 9/16/2016 (3pm-6pm) or Saturday, 9/17/2016 (9am-noon)</strong> at the Champaign County Forest Preserve District (CCFPD) Maintenance Building located at 650 N Lombard, Mahomet, IL. It is located just S of the Museum of the Prairie at Lake of the Woods. From I-74, go north on Hwy 47 past the cemetery and one house/driveway.
