<p>The Horticulture Hotline will open its doors for business on <strong>Monday, April 11</strong>. By working in the office, you stay up-to-date on how to control, identify, and remedy some of the biggest problems in a season. The Horticulture Hotline is one of the best ways to get involved, get immersed, and <strong>LEARN</strong> more about horticulture. Plus, you can count your hours in the Horticulture Hotline as either <em>Volunteer </em>or <em>Continuing Education</em> hours.</p>
<p><strong><em>As a reminder, you are not required to answer homeowner’s questions immediately.</em></strong> We encourage you to kindly tell the homeowner that we will respond to questions within 48 hours with the best researched answer we can come up with.</p>

<p>New this year, you can sign up for a 2-hour shift verses a 4-hour morning or afternoon shift. This was done to make it easier for you to fit a few hours of volunteer time in your busy schedule. If you would rather work an entire morning, or afternoon, just sign up for two 2-hour shifts!</p>
<p>Master Gardener interns will also need some guidance! Please sign up to support them on their first day of the job!</p>
<p>If the Horticulture Hotline is having a slow day, you are welcome to bring personal material to work on (books, laptop, etc.) while waiting for a homeowner.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong><em>Saturday, June 18</em></strong></span></p>
<p>June 18 is 2016 Garden Walk Day and, though it may seem far away, the Garden Walk Committee needs your commitment to help. Garden Walk is the primary (virtually the only) fundraising event for Champaign County Master Gardeners. The money we raise funds all of your favorite CCMG community gardens and the educational programs presented throughout the year. And Garden Walk is lots of fun! So join your fellow Master Gardeners to share your love of gardening with the public.</p>
<p>Under the theme <strong><em>Garden Destinations</em></strong>, Garden Walk 2016 features 6 private gardens as well as a commercial organic fruit, vegetable, and flower garden . . . plus Japan House, the Hosta Garden, and (of course) the Idea Garden. More information about the gardens is available at the Extension Office.</p>
<p>So please sign up to work as a Site Volunteer on Garden Walk Day. A description of responsibilities of Site Volunteers is included at the end of this email. We will have two shifts at each garden:</p>

<li>The morning (AM) shift from 8:15 AM – 12:30 PM on June 18.</li>
<li>The afternoon (PM) shift from 12:15 PM – 4:15 PM on June 18.</li>

<p>You can sign up for one shift or both shifts. To make signing up as easy as possible, we are using the online tool VolunteerSpot. No registration or passwords are needed. <p><strong><em>Responsibilities of Garden Walk Site Volunteers</em></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Be present during assigned shift on Garden Walk Day to welcome visitors, help with tickets, provide assistance to visitors and answer questions about the garden, Garden Walk, and the Master Gardener program.</li>
<li>Attend orientation/garden preview scheduled by Site Chairs to become familiar with the assigned garden, plants, and planned organization for Garden Walk Day.</li>
<li>Assist with light garden tasks (such as raking, weeding, deadheading) in the weeks just prior to Garden Walk Day.</li>
<li>Site Volunteers may attend the Garden Walk Preview on the Friday evening before the Garden Walk.</li>

<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;"><em>Rain Barrel/Rain Garden Study</em></span></strong></p>
<p>We are researchers with the University of Illinois seeking participants for a study of <br /> privately-owned rain barrels and rain gardens in the Champaign-Urbana area. The purpose of our study is to identify whether there are conditions that can allow mosquitoes to develop in these two common tools for managing rainwater.</p>
<p>Participants in our study will initially be asked to answer a few questions related to the design, <br /> construction and maintenance of their rain garden or rain barrels. We would also like to re-visit <br /> homes with rain gardens throughout the summer (June to August) to check them for standing water and mosquitoes a few days after rain storms. Rain barrels of study participants will be examined for mosquitoes on 1 to 3 occasions (approximately once per month) during the summer.</p>
<p>Information collected from our study will be gladly shared with each participant. While we expect that rain barrels and rain gardens seldom produce mosquitoes, our hope is that this study can reveal ways to manage these tools that further minimizes this risk.</p>

<p>The University of Illinois Extension and the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network (CoCoRaHS) are partnering to host a CoCoRaHS Observer Training on <strong>Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Moyer District Library in Gibson City, Illinois</strong>. This training is free and open to the public, the only requirement is that volunteers must use a standard 4-inch rain gauge.</p>
<p>The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network (CoCoRaHS) is a grassroots volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities.</p>
<p>PLUS - Master Gardeners participating in CoCoRaHS can report 2 volunteer hours per month!</p>

<p>This event takes place at Danville Gardens, 1307 Cleary Ave. Class size is limited to 30 people and attendees must register and prepay $25 at the Extension office <u>not</u> Danville Gardens.</p>
<p>Container is <u>not</u> included-bring your own and make something special! Danville Gardens will remain open for attendees so you have time to do some extra shopping. Some plants will be on sale.</p>

As our unit (Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and Vermilion counties) is “hosting” the event local Master Gardeners will be asked to assist with registration, silent auction, etc. I will share announcements and more detailed request in the coming months.</p>
<p>At the conference, there will be a silent auction to support Master Gardener mini-grants, a keynote speaker, State Master Gardener awards presentation, catered lunch followed by afternoon tours.</p>
