Horticulture Hotline

The Horticulture Hotline will open its doors for business on Monday, April 11. By working in the office, you stay up-to-date on how to control, identify, and remedy some of the biggest problems in a season. The Horticulture Hotline is one of the best ways to get involved, get immersed, and LEARN more about horticulture. Plus, you can count your hours in the Horticulture Hotline as either Volunteer or Continuing Education hours.

As a reminder, you are not required to answer homeowner’s questions immediately. We encourage you to kindly tell the homeowner that we will respond to questions within 48 hours with the best researched answer we can come up with.

Still not sure about the hotline? View Vermilion County Master Gardener Terry Collier's testimonial (above) about his first experience working the Horticulture Hotline.

New this year, you can sign up for a 2-hour shift verses a 4-hour morning or afternoon shift. This was done to make it easier for you to fit a few hours of volunteer time in your busy schedule. If you would rather work an entire morning, or afternoon, just sign up for two 2-hour shifts!

Master Gardener interns will also need some guidance! Please sign up to support them on their first day of the job!

If the Horticulture Hotline is having a slow day, you are welcome to bring personal material to work on (books, laptop, etc.) while waiting for a homeowner.

Garden Walk 2016

Saturday, June 18

June 18 is 2016 Garden Walk Day and, though it may seem far away, the Garden Walk Committee needs your commitment to help. Garden Walk is the primary (virtually the only) fundraising event for Champaign County Master Gardeners. The money we raise funds all of your favorite CCMG community gardens and the educational programs presented throughout the year. And Garden Walk is lots of fun! So join your fellow Master Gardeners to share your love of gardening with the public.

Under the theme Garden Destinations, Garden Walk 2016 features 6 private gardens as well as a commercial organic fruit, vegetable, and flower garden . . . plus Japan House, the Hosta Garden, and (of course) the Idea Garden. More information about the gardens is available at the Extension Office.

So please sign up to work as a Site Volunteer on Garden Walk Day. A description of responsibilities of Site Volunteers is included at the end of this email. We will have two shifts at each garden:

The morning (AM) shift from 8:15 AM – 12:30 PM on June 18.

The afternoon (PM) shift from 12:15 PM – 4:15 PM on June 18

You can sign up for one shift or both shifts. To make signing up as easy as possible, we are using the online tool VolunteerSpot. No registration or passwords are needed. To volunteer, just click on this link http://vols.pt/HhffxM and choose the time you want to volunteer. If you want to request a specific garden, click on Comment and indicate your preferred garden(s). We will make every effort to honor your preference. Assignments will be made in the order that volunteers sign up.

Order now till August!

Interested in expanding the use of native flora in your yard or garden? East Central Illinois Master Naturalists (ECIMN) are making available for purchase a selection of trees and shrubs indigenous to Illinois. Our soil and climate have tested these plants for 8,000 years, it's a good bet they will work for you! Click here to see a detailed description of each tree and shrub offered below.

Enjoy the benefits of using native plants:

Increases/restores the native range of species that are important to local ecology and wildlife habitat (like butterflies!)

Decreases the risks found with monoculture plantings, i.e. pests, diseases, invasive, etc.

Using natives is ecologically responsible

Native species are adapted to local weather patterns and are more tolerant of changes in weather, when they are sited correctly

Can reduce overall costs on an acre of property by as much as 75%

All plants come in special 5 gallon containers which are designed to encourage numerous roots but inhibit circling roots. No chemicals (such as copper) are used to enhance a fibrous root system.

Plants cost $25 each (including shipping and handling). Orders will be accepted until 8/31/2016.

Your order will be delivered locally for pickup on Friday, 9/16/2016 (3pm-6pm) or Saturday, 9/17/2016 (9am-noon) at the Champaign County Forest Preserve District (CCFPD) Maintenance Building located at 650 N Lombard, Mahomet, IL.
