Friday, April 29, from 5:30 p.m-7:30 p.m.

Master Gardeners have been asked to assist Leal Elementary School in Urbana to assist providing information to families on how to grow/start their own vegetable gardens. Leal is hosting a Science and Wellness night on Friday, April 29 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Master Gardeners will be passing out vegetable seeds to interested families, and possibly provide advice on starting vegetables at home. The school was given over 300 heirloom seed packets and teachers and families have also donated many. Their goal is that to share the seeds with anyone who needs them. Instead of distributing entire packets, however, seeds will be divvied up to families by what they need/want into envelopes/baggies.

Dear Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, and Lovers of Pollinators,

Me and my fellow pollinators, the butterflies and moths, the skippers and so many others, are inviting you to our grand estate, the University of Illinois Pollinatarium. We need help maintaining our home for it takes a lot to keep this place going! There's planting, weeding, trimming, pruning and general clean-up. So bring your tools, work gloves, a hat, sunglasses and water to drink.

If you are a Master Naturalist or Master Gardener you can fulfill volunteer hours working here. If not, do it for love! I guarantee, it will be rewarding and we thank you for your support! Let’s get buzzy!!

Horticulture Hotline

The Horticulture Hotline will open its doors for business on Monday, April 11. By working in the office, you stay up-to-date on how to control, identify, and remedy some of the biggest problems in a season. The Horticulture Hotline is one of the best ways to get involved, get immersed, and LEARN more about horticulture. Plus, you can count your hours in the Horticulture Hotline as either Volunteer or Continuing Education hours.

As a reminder, you are not required to answer homeowner’s questions immediately. We encourage you to kindly tell the homeowner that we will respond to questions within 48 hours with the best researched answer we can come up with.

Still not sure about the hotline? View Vermilion County Master Gardener Terry Collier's testimonial (above) about his first experience working the Horticulture Hotline.

New this year, you can sign up for a 2-hour shift verses a 4-hour morning or afternoon shift. This was done to make it easier for you to fit a few hours of volunteer time in your busy schedule. If you would rather work an entire morning, or afternoon, just sign up for two 2-hour shifts!

Master Gardener interns will also need some guidance! Please sign up to support them on their first day of the job!

If the Horticulture Hotline is having a slow day, you are welcome to bring personal material to work on (books, laptop, etc.) while waiting for a homeowner.

These workdays are also a great opportunity to meet other Master Gardeners and experience the variety of community gardens we manage as Champaign County Master Gardeners!

Saturday, June 18

June 18 is 2016 Garden Walk Day and, though it may seem far away, the Garden Walk Committee needs your commitment to help. Garden Walk is the primary (virtually the only) fundraising event for Champaign County Master Gardeners. The money we raise funds all of your favorite CCMG community gardens and the educational programs presented throughout the year. And Garden Walk is lots of fun! So join your fellow Master Gardeners to share your love of gardening with the public.

Under the theme Garden Destinations, Garden Walk 2016 features 6 private gardens as well as a commercial organic fruit, vegetable, and flower garden . . . plus Japan House, the Hosta Garden, and (of course) the Idea Garden. More information about the gardens is available at the Extension Office

So please sign up to work as a Site Volunteer on Garden Walk Day. A description of responsibilities of Site Volunteers is included at the end of this email. We will have two shifts at each garden:

The morning (AM) shift from 8:15 AM – 12:30 PM on June 18.

The afternoon (PM) shift from 12:15 PM – 4:15 PM on June 18.

You can sign up for one shift or both shifts. To make signing up as easy as possible, we are using the online tool VolunteerSpot. No registration or passwords are needed.
Started more than 30 years ago, the Urbana Park District Advisory Committee helps the board and park district staff to create long-term benefits for the community by bringing citizen concerns to the forefront. The Urbana Park District is seeking Urbana Park District residents interested in being appointed by the Urbana Park District Board of Commissioners to UPDAC to fill spots of citizen advisory committee members whose terms are completed.

Citizens from throughout Urbana sit on the committee each year. They work to represent their neighborhood and neighborhood park. “What better way to find out what’s going on in a park than to talk with someone who lives nearby and uses that park,” said Development Manager Ellen Kirsanoff. Please contact Ellen at erkirsanoff@urbanaparks.org if you are interested or have any questions.
