<p>This FREE event kicks off at 8:00 a.m. with registration, coffee and rolls, and an opportunity to visit the 2016 Ford-Iroquois Extension Agribusiness Partner displays. After introductions and recognition of the Agribusiness Partners, University of Illinois Extension Weed Science Specialist, Aaron Hager will kick off the day’s talks with “2016: A Season Without Weeds.” At the same time, for the spouse program, Ford-Iroquois Master Gardener Mary Dickinson will present “Medieval Plants for Today’s Gardens.”</p>
<p>Following a brief networking break, Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel will answer the question “After El Nino, What’s in Store for 2016?” Dennis Bowman, University of Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator, will finish the session with “The Expanding Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Agriculture.”</p>

<p>Keynote speaker will be Doug Tallamy, professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. Tallamy will discuss the important ecological roles of the plants in our landscapes, emphasize the ecological, educational, physical, and emotional benefits of designing landscapes with these roles in mind, and explore the consequences of failing to do so. Managing landscapes in this crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore. Tallamy’s book <em>Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens</em>, was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers' Association. The Living Landscape, co-authored with Rick Darke, was published in 2014. Among his awards are the Garden Club of America Margaret Douglas Medal for Conservation and the Tom Dodd, Jr. Award of Excellence.</p>
<p>Along with the keynote speaker, 13 additional gardening classes will be offered throughout the day. Classes include topics on beekeeping, growing great tomatoes, native shrubs, summer bulbs, seed starting, building an insect hotel and many, many more! <p>The University of Illinois Extension presents a weekly educational series for the small farm community. This series will provide practical knowledge on emerging topics which advance local food production in Illinois. These online presentations will give small farm producers a look at how leading practices in production, management, and marketing enable operations to improve profitability and sustainability. This year's series includes new topics such as farm pond ecology, producing Shiitake mushrooms, the emerging local grain economy in Illinois, raising meat birds on pasture and growing great blackberries.</p>
