CE: LAST University of Illinois Herb Day

Saturday, January 23 at 8 a.m.

The very last University of Illinois Herb Day has been scheduled for Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 8:00 am (when registration begins and the retail area opens) through 5:30 pm, at the Wyndham Garden Inn and Conference Center, 1001 Killarney St., Urbana, IL. (217) 328-7900. The Wyndham (formerly the Holiday Inn) is just south and west of exit #183 off I-74 (Lincoln Avenue), conveniently located and easy to find.

This is the same location as the past 16 Herb Days, and the seventeenth anniversary, overall. Hotel rooms are reserved for Herb Day attendees at the special Herb Day rate ($70, single or double) until January 15. After that date, this rate will only be in effect if rooms at the hotel remain available. There is also a Holiday Inn Express just across the parking lot from the Wyndham Garden Inn. The first educational session begins promptly at 9 am. Here’s who is on the schedule:

Susan Belsinger, of Brookville, Maryland, is an accomplished speaker, chef, blogger, and book author, who will present From Mild to Wild: Capsicum, 2016 Herb of the Year, a tasty demonstration of several unique recipes, and Herbs in the Gardens at Colonial Williamsburg, a beautiful pictorial of the gardens there, now that our friend, Don Haynie, has a hand in their development and maintenance.

Tina Marie Wilcox, of the Ozark Mountain Folk Center, in Mountain View, Arkansas, and past president of the International Herb Association will join Susan for the Williamsburg talk, and will also present Herbal Wisdom from the Widder Wilcox, an in-character discussion of the herbs of the Ozark Plateau

Joshua Young, partner in Long Creek Herbs, Blue Eye, Missouri, will give us some tips for Living the Herbal Lifestyle. Josh has worked with elder hostels and written a very popular newspaper column for years. His Missouri Curiosities books detail all the quirky and interesting places to visit in Missouri. He is an expert at putting an audience in a happy and relaxed frame of mind.

Josh’s partner in Long Creek Herbs, Jim Long, will also be presenting at this year’s event. Jim’s many books and public appearances have made him a household name in the world of herbs. For years, he wrote a regular column for The Herb Companion. His Bentwood Trellises book is Chuck Voigt’s favorite. This year, Jim will take us on a visual journey featuring Art in the Herb Garden.

The final speaker of the day will be Daniel Gagnon, the owner of Herbs Etc. in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a high quality producer and marketer of herbal blends and tonics. His commonsense approach to herbal medicine delivers a wealth of information every time he speaks. In honor of Capsicum being the Herb of the Year in 2016, Daniel is going to tell us about The Amazing Healing Properties of Cayenne.

This will be the final time Herb Day will be held, due to the retirement of its inventor and host, Chuck Voigt. This means that this will be the last chance to join in on the herbal fun and fellowship here. To celebrate, there will be an extra hour of programming and more music from Chuck. The speaker lineup is an all-star group, only one or two of which would have headlined previous Herb Day programs.

As usual there will be a retail area, selling a wide variety of herb, spice, and gardening products. Get a jump-start on the 2016 gardening season by shopping now. Morning coffee and tea will be available near the exhibit area, and an herb-themed lunch buffet will be served in the Atrium. The capacity of the lecture room has been slightly expanded to 270, but be sure to send in your reservations early to avoid disappointment. Tell all your friends what a good time Herb Day has been every year. If a friend hasn’t received the mailing, please share yours or put them in touch with us. You might also want to carpool, to cut down on travel expenses and auto emissions. We are working with the hotel to alleviate the sound system issues of last year.

This year, again, on-line credit card registration is available! The registration site is https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?registrationid=13392. Attendees may register through January 15, as long as space remains available. Registrations will be allotted on a first come, first served basis, so reserve now. Once the available 270 spaces are filled, any additional registrations will be returned. On-site registration will only be available if all 270 seats are not filled by pre-registration. On-site registration does not guarantee lunch if received after January 15.

The hotel is no longer preparing its own food, so this year we will be paying for both meeting space and an outside caterer. For this reason, we reluctantly must raise the price of registration, to $70 per person. This includes seating in the lectures, coffee, and tea during morning registration, an herbal theme lunch buffet, and access to the retail area. Note that this year we will need to book vegetarian meals along with the vegan and gluten-free plates. The caterer will have a vegetarian entrée ONLY for those who request it in advance. Look for the place to make this request on the registration form. Reservations must be received by January 15, 2016, to guarantee lunch.

Those interested in attending Herb Day 2016 on January 23, 2016 can use the following registration https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?registrationid=13392 to register by either credit card or check. If you do not have access to on-line registration you can mail a check directly to Herb Day 2016, Attn: Linda Harvey, 1005 Plant Sciences Lab, 1201 S.
If you register on-line you will get an automatic confirmation or you may call (217) 244-1693 or e-mail lharvey@illinois.edu.
