Monday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m.

The East Central Illinois Master Naturalists (ECIMN) invite you to take a tour of the current sky by attending a public seminar:

Monday, October 19

6:30-8:00pm

UI Extension Auditorium, 801 N. Country Fair Drive, Champaign, IL 61821

2015 has been an interesting year for astronomists with two fly-bys of dwarf planets, a lunar eclipse, and the discovery of new planets beyond our solar system. Planetarium director, Dave Leake, will take us through a tour of the current sky before elaborating on some of this year’s successes (and frustrations).

Dave Leake has been sharing the sky with others since he caught the “astronomy bug” in fifth grade. Since 1989, he has been doing this through his work at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College where he has been planetarium director since 2000. He also is currently past-president of the Great Lakes Planetarium Association (the largest of seven regional groups in the country) and co-founder of the CU Astronomical Society.

Registration is required by August 18. This program is free and open to the public. Questions can be directed to Diane Wilhite, drwilhit@illinois.edu, 217-333-7672.

Beginning at 6:15 p.m., refreshments will be available to attendees who are interested in learning more about the Champaign County Master Gardeners. At 6:30 p.m. a panel of Master Gardeners will give testimonies of their involvement in the program. The panel will talk about their hesitations in joining the program, what they experienced during training, and how they've been involved since. The panel will accept questions after the discussion.

***This is a perfect time to invite your gardening friends who have questions about the Master Gardener Program! Visit the Champaign County Extension office for postcards to mail!***

Beginning at 7:00 p.m., Don White, Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Illinois, will begin his presentation on Environmental Damage Affecting Trees and Outdoor Landscapes. Dr. White is often asked by the public, “Why are our trees dying?” This has also been a common question posed by people who call the Champaign County Master Gardener Horticulture Hotline. All anyone needs to do is just drive around, and look at the number of trees that are failing. It seems that arborists are working full time taking down trees including many that are very old.

Dr. White will discuss this and other questions in a talk he is giving to the public and Master Gardeners on October 20th, 2015. The talk will be held at the Champaign County Extension Office, 801 North Country Fair Drive, Champaign, at 7:00 p.m. He will address several major causes of tree loss: some are environmental; others, disease-based; and in many situations, both work together to kill the trees.

The entire program is free and open to the public.
