<p>The Peoria Herb Society is conducting a bus trip for 30-35 of its members this <strong>Saturday, August 22</strong>. They will be touring local Champaign-Urbana Horticulture “hot-spots” including the pollinatarium, U of I Conservatory, and the Idea Garden! <strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">I need 3 Master Gardeners willing to guide the group around the Idea Garden.</span> The group is on a tight time-schedule, so the tour is limited to 1 hour, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.</strong></p>

<p>Join the Champaign County Master Gardeners <strong>Tuesday, September 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.</strong> for a tour and tea ceremony at the University of Illinois Japan House in Urbana, located on the University of Illinois Arboretum. The direct address of Japan House is 2000 South Lincoln Avenue, Urbana.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><strong><em>Special Report: Basil Downy Mildew</em></strong></span></p>
<p>On August 10, I observed and confirmed downy mildew of basil in our research plots in Champaign, Illinois. I expect downy mildew on basil develop throughout the state. Thus, fungicide treatment for control of the disease on green basils is essential.</p>
<p>Downy mildew of basil, caused by <em>Peronospora belbahrii</em>, occurred first in Illinois in 2009. Since then the disease developed on basils every year. <em>P. belbahrii</em> infects leaves, rapidly develops and spreads, and can cause total crop loss. Since 2009, we have had trials for evaluating efficacy of fungicides for control of basil downy mildew every year. The results of our trials showed that the disease can be effectively controlled by weekly applications of the following fungicides: Quadris, Revus, and Ranman. These fungicides have different modes of action and all three are registered for downy mildew of basils. To prevent resistance development of in the pathogen, the fungicides should be alternated – follow the label guidelines.
