Calls are steadily coming in! We need your help! The Horticulture Hotline is one of the best ways to get involved, get immersed, and LEARN. Plus, you’ll be in the comfort of air conditioning!

Two Master Gardeners can sign up for each shift, so bring a buddy! Also, sign-up is for 4 hour increments, but if you cannot commit to 4 hours, that’s OK. Just inform me and the secretaries before or upon your arrival.

Pollinators sustain the plant communities humans rely on. Their numbers are in decline largely due to the destruction of suitable habitat and the use of pesticides. You can have a positive influence on pollinator populations and diversity by planting pollinator-friendly gardens and promoting this practice with others. Maggie Dougherty-Roberts (Master Gardener and Master Naturalist) and Japhia Ramkumar (Master Gardener) are inviting Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, and friends to tour their pollinator friendly gardens and subdivision public areas. Maggie and fellow master naturalist, Gary Russell, will lead the tour and answer questions. The intent of this tour is to help attendees become more knowledgeable and confident about transforming their own lawns into pollinator friendly habitat and influencing neighbors to join in.

Suburban gardens tie our home to the surrounding landscape, provide an outlet for artistic expression, are a source for natural beauty, and offer refuge from a hectic and unpleasant world. This presentation by Horticulture Educator, Sonja Lallemand, will introduce ideas on designing your landscape with Illinois native plants that nurture and feed our little friends, bring you joy and require minimal care. Learn how you can do your part in your own backyard.

Freshwater is precious to living things and it is becoming increasingly scarce due to misuse, pollution, and climate change. Rain gardens are a beautiful way to help keep clean, fresh rainwater out of the sewer system and to reduce pollution and preserve our water systems. Further, a rain garden can support threatened pollinators when they include native plants vital to pollinating insects and birds. And you don't have to be a scientist or ecologist to establish a successful rain garden.

The Champaign County Master Gardeners and the East Central Illinois Master Naturalists invite you to learn more about rain gardens at the following events:

Rain Garden lecture on Monday, July 13 6:30-8:00pm, UI Extension Auditorium, 801 N. Country Fair Drive, Champaign, IL 61821

Rain Garden tour on Tuesday, July 21 5:00-7:00pm, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, 302 N 1st St, Champaign, IL 61820

The Rain Garden tour will be limited to 40 participants and requires attendance at the Rain Garden lecture. Participants will be expected to carpool in groups of four or more from the starting location (Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation).

The University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners from Madison, Monroe and St. Clair Counties invite you to join us at the 2015 Illinois Master Gardener Conference. These volunteers have chosen "Gardening the Spice of Life" as their conference theme. Join fellow Master Gardeners as we explore the use of edibles in your landscape as well as elements of design, native plants and plant materials. Class topics are targeted for both Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists!

Keynote speaker is Rosalind Creasy, internationally known garden and food writer, speaker and landscape designer. Rosalind's first book, The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping, won the Garden Writers Quill and Trowel award and coined the term 'edible landscaping'. Ms. Creasy will talk on Edible Landscaping and Gardening with Heirloom Vegetables and Flowers.

CE: Invasive Species Symposium – Video Recording

If you were not able to attend the symposium this year, the individual presentations are available online at this website for viewing:

http://www.invasive.org/illinois/2015InvasiveSpeciesSymposium.html

This is the first time we’ve captured a presentation in this manner – with speaker and their presentation adjusted real-time. It may serve as a way to provide education on the web in the future for master naturalists. So if you do decide to view one of the presentations and have any feedback, contact East Central Illinois Master Naturalist Program Coordinator Diane Wilhite,
