Plagued by mosquitoes? Here is your chance to add to the body of knowledge about mosquitoes and where they like to hang out. Not much commitment on your part just need to give them access to set traps. Read below for more info. Now please contact Dr. Muturi directly if you are interested in allowing your garden to be in the study. emuturi2 at illinois.edu<mailto:emuturi2 at illinois.edu>

Dr. Juma Muturi is the head of the medical entomology program at the Illinois Natural History Survey. She studies mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit. Dr. Muturi, Dr. Brenda Molano-Flores and their student Nathan Stables are interested in studying how common landscape plants influence the ecology and behavior of mosquito vectors of West Nile Virus. To address this question, they are interested in conducting mosquito surveys in about 10-15 master gardens.

A few details: They are interested in studying how the flowering plants that are propagated in the landscape influence the ecology and behavior of mosquitoes. they would begin by visiting the selected master gardens and take inventory of the composition and relative abundance of different types of flowering plants that are propagated in these gardens. After this task, they would set out mosquito traps in these gardens to see how different species of flowering plants influence the composition and relative abundance of mosquito populations. The mosquito sampling will be conducted once per week in the months of July, August, and September. Ideally, they would not want the home owners to change their routines. If MGs do spray their yards with insecticides, they can continue to do so. But they will request MGs do not spray on the night when they set up the traps, which again will be once per week. They can change this to once every two weeks if once every week does not work for most people.
