VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
V: University of Illinois Horticulture Club Flower Show
April 11 & 12
Master Gardener volunteers are needed to staff a booth at the University of Illinois Horticulture Club Flower show. This event takes place annual during Mom’s Weekend for the University of Illinois. The Horticulture Club Flower Show takes place in the Stock Pavilion (1402 W. Pennsylvania, Urbana).

Master Gardener volunteers will be expected to offer information about the Master Gardener program, its goals, purpose, and activities. Volunteers may also be asked garden-related questions, which a Master Gardener manual will be available to reference.
V: Horticulture Hotline
Opens today! Sign-up for your shift!
The Horticulture Hotline will open its doors for business on Monday, April 9. By working in the office, you stay up-to-date on how to control, identify, and remedy some of the biggest problems in a season. The Horticulture Hotline is one of the best ways to get involved, get immersed, and LEARN more about horticulture. Plus, you can count your hours in the Horticulture Hotline as either Volunteer or Continuing Education hours.
As a reminder, you are not required to answer homeowner’s questions immediately. We encourage you to kindly tell the homeowner that we will respond to questions within 48 hours with the best researched answer we can come up with. Two Master Gardeners can sign up for each shift, so bring a buddy!
Master Gardener trainees will also need some guidance! Please sign up to support them on their first day of the job!
If the Horticulture Hotline is having a slow day, you are welcome to bring personal material to work on (books, laptop, etc.) while waiting for a homeowner.

V: Community Garden Spring Workdays
Come one, come all! All hands are needed to open up the gardens for 2015! Join the fun and comradery with your fellow Master Gardener volunteers at the following spring workdays:
Juvenile Detention Center – Friday, April 10 at 11 am
            *This is only a workday. There will be no scheduled interaction with the students.
            * Rain date is scheduled for Friday, April 17 at 11 am
Idea Garden Wake-Up the Garden – Saturday, April 11 at 8 am
            *Light snacks will be provided! Please bring your own hot beverage.
Crisis Nursery Wake-Up the Garden – Saturday, April 18 at 8 am

7:15pm – Invasive Plant Control Strategies
Free Online Webinar Series from the University of Illinois Extension. After you learn to identify invasive plant species the next step is control. Tuesday, April 7 - 6:30 pm - Danville, IL
You have been reading Sandy’s Homeowner’s Column in the News Gazette for the last 22 years.  She has held a weekly television spot on WCIA 3 Morning for 6 years and recently began a monthly CILiving spot.  She is the Gardening Guru in East Central Illinois and will be sharing her wealth of knowledge and gardening humor with us in April and May.  In April she will discuss Compost - How it works?  Why it doesn’t?  When is the best time to start?  She will also explain different methods available to the average homeowner.  Handouts will be provided.
This class will be held at 6:30 at Crossroads Christian Church, 3613 N. Vermilion St. in Danville.  Cost is $5.00 per person.

CE: Climate Change Confusion
Monday, April 13 – 6:30 pm
The issue of climate change is often a polarizing topic of debate in the United States.  For many, the science behind Earth's ever changing climate is a confusing and complex topic, which makes it difficult to understand the nearly constant stream of news on this subject.
Join East Central Illinois Master Naturalists as they sponsor a lecture open to the public that will focus on the clear and concise science of climate change. The lecture will be held at the Champaign County Extension office at 801 N. Country Fair Drive, Champaign. Registration is due by Friday, April 10.
As caretakers of this planet, stewardship and conservation are core elements of our mission and through this talk, we will learn about natural variability in the Earth's climate and how humans interact with these natural cycles. Furthermore, we will learn the reasons why climate change is a source of debate and confusion and talk about ways to actively and intelligently participate discussions on this topic. The aim of this talk is equip the audience with the latest, peer-reviewed, scientifically accepted information on climate change. Through this presentation, we will gain insight and clarity into the impacts of Earth's changing climate.
The speaker, Eric Snodgrass, is the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Atmospheric Science at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

CE: Naturally Illinois Expo
 Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18
Location: Forbes Natural History Building, U of IL campus
The Expo showcases the work of the U of I Prairie Research Institute, home of the Illinois Natural History Survey, State Archeological Survey, State Geological Survey, State Water Survey, and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.  It provides an opportunity for students and the general public to learn more about the natural and cultural resources of the state as well as see the latest in research and technology used to map, preserve, and experiment to better understand our environment.

CE: From Blooms to Butterflies
Tuesday, April 21 at 7 pm
Dr. Michael Jeffords and Susan L. Post who will be presenting "From Blooms to Butterflies."
Both are retired scientists from the Illinois Natural History Survey who have spent most of their lives exploring the landscapes of Illinois.
Drawing from their new book, A Field Guide to Illinois Butterflies, they will expand their presentation to address the crucial role of pollinators in the landscape. Also, learn how and where to have a Big Year discovering Illinois Butterflies.

Their field guide, Butterflies of Illinois, and new book Exploring the Nature of Illinois, will be available for purchase at the event.

Idea Garden Tropical Section – Pots Needed!
The Idea Garden Tropical section is in need 6", 8", 10", and 12' black starter pots for their plant sale beginning in mid-April (more information to come).
Please deliver donated pots to the Champaign Extension office (801 N. Country Fair Drive).
University of Illinois Conservatory and Greenhouse Plant Sales
Master Gardeners are encouraged to help support the University of Illinois Conservatory and Greenhouse by purchasing plants during their annual sales. Save the date for the following sales:
April 2015 Mom’s Weekend:
            April 11: 9 am – 4 pm
            April 12: 10 am – 2 pm
May 2015 10th Annual Plant Sale:
            May 1: 11 am – 1 pm
            May 2: 10 am – 12 pm

Unit 13 Master Gardener 2015 Spring Bus Trip - Friday, May 1
Indianapolis Art Museum
Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and Vermilion County Master Gardeners will be traveling to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to view the Oldfield’s Gardens on Friday, May 1. The day will include a tour of the Oldfield gardens, followed by an afternoon of enjoying the museum. The bus will stop at Avon Gardens in Avon, IN on the trip home.

The bus trip costs $35. Museum admission and the Guided Garden Tour are included in the price of the bus trip. Lunch will be on your own. The cost does not include gratuity. An envelope will be passed day-of for gratuity donation.
